Rochelle Alexandra’s poignant novel ‘In Alexa’s Shoes’ offers an eye-opening insight into the magnitude of the Nazis heinous reign. Rochelle shares her grandma's, Alexa, story of her life as a Polish girl during the Second World War, shining a light on a lesser-known part of the regime’s atrocities.

This moving novel cleverly shares these experiences in an accessible tone to make the sheer cruelty the reader must process when reading somewhat digestible. I can admit there were genuinely moments in this book where I needed to pause and just sit in silence while I processed the mercilessness humans can possess towards one another.

The stories of survivors of the Second World War don’t just deserve to be told, they deserve to be listened to until they are embedded within us. We need to physically embody the lessons of the war to ensure we never have to experience them. Unfortunately, as the international political stage has seen a shift to the right in recent years, I fear reading this novel is more important than ever. Love, compassion, and understanding is more important than ever.

Alexa’s magnanimous spirit is something we should all aspire to embody – truly a person of unimaginable strength and unwavering faith.
