On Monday night, Mary hosted the first of a series of surgeries, with this session focusing on publishing revealing all the industry knowledge that you need to succeed!

So what is a publishing surgery?

A publishing surgery is a webinar. The group size is kept small with only a handful of people attending the session, each bringing their own queries (similar to a doctor's surgery). This small group setting really allows for all attendees to ask specific questions relating to their own writing - whilst also learning from questions that other attendees ask (about things they might not have even thought of). In just a 90 minute session, attendees are left with a clear idea of their next steps of how best to proceed, in line with their own personal goals.

Mary began the session by introducing herself then asking those in attendance to do the same (don't worry there are no awkward icebreakers here just sharing your name and a bit about where you are on your writing journey!) Mary then moved on to provide a general overview of the two main type of publishing: traditional publishing and self-publishing before giving a stark warning about the perils of hybrid publishing which I can summarise in one word for you: AVOID!

During this session Mary's exhaustive knowledge really shone, revealing all the industry insights she's learnt through her own experiences. Despite attendees having different focuses within their writing, Mary handled all attendees questions with equal level of detail and insight.

'I'm so pleased I attended Mary's publishing surgery. She shared good, honest advice, so I learned a great deal and now feel ready to start taking my writing further'

Shelia Kinninmonth

'Mary's Publishing Surgery was really helpful and informative. I liked how informal and friendly it was, and it being a small group made it especially useful as I could ask very specific questions regarding my writing. I gathered a lot of insight that I previously didn't know about publishing, and the legalities of writing a memoir. I would highly recommend any budding or current writers to attend and pick the brains of an international best-selling author'
